‘Learning from nature to change the world’
As part of IaaC’s commitment to promoting and advancing habitability in the world on the basis of ecological principles and to making the fullest use of all available technologies and resources, we have created a research centre focused on the idea of self-sufficiency, with a view to providing a worldwide point of reference. Valldaura Labs is an opportunity to learn directly from nature in order to bring that understanding to the regeneration of 21st-century cities.
IaaC was founded in 2001, and its first academic initiative was the Master in Advanced Architecture, a programme which remains true to its origins, reflected in such projects as the Dictionary of Advanced Architecture, Media House (in collaboration with MIT in Boston), the exhibition Hypercatalunya, the Hyperhabitat exhibition at the Venice Biennale and the FabLab House as part of the Solar Decathlon programme. Many of these ideas and principles have already been taken up by various departments and agencies of Barcelona City Council with a view to the transformation of the city in the 21st century.
Valldaura Labs is a cutting-edge venture actively engaged in developing a new concept of people-focused habitability the engine of all actions, in which local self-sufficiency and the transaction of knowledge through global information networks facilitate sharing and generate progress. Valldaura Labs has been co-funded by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, the National Plan for Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation 2008-2011 under the reference number TSI-070200-2009-69. It also has the support of companies such as Endesa, Roca and Santa & Cole, and with the collaboration of various centres of higher learning — the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona — and the Generalitat de Catalunya.
